What would you do with $1000?

To find out, enter the Games 4 Girls game design competition!

All you have to do is get together with a few friends and create a computer game that is FUN for middle school or high school girls. Submit your game to the Games 4 Girls contest, and if our panel of high school girls, game design professionals, and UIUC computer science faculty thinks your game is the most FUN (and original and creative and technically interesting) then you and your teammates each win $1000! In addition, $1000 more goes to the Women in CS organization on your campus (if none exists, start one!). There are great prizes for second and third place, too.

All games will be developed using GameMaker, a fabulous game design platform for the PC that can be downloaded from the GameMaker website. GameMaker allows you to create great games without a lot of programming, though there is a scripting language to give you ultimate design flexibility.

A retreat and celebration to mark the end of the contest occurs on April 7-8, 2006 in the new Siebel Center for Computer Science on the UIUC campus. At that event, high school girls will play the games and help decide on the winners. In addition to the high school game players, University of Illinois computer science professors and Mark Overmars, the creator of GameMaker, will help with the judging.

To play:

  1. Find up to 4 friends to make a team.
  2. Register at this site to receive a GameMaker software registration key by December 23, 2005.
  3. Download GameMaker.
  4. Dream up and make the game.
  5. Send us your game by March 13, 2006.
  6. Attend the ChicTech retreat and celebration April 7-8, 2006 (optional). We’ll post details here soon.
