[1678] Wisdom
Guest poem submitted by Lieven Marchand <mal@>:
When I have ceased to break my wings
Against the faultiness of things,
And learned that compromises wait
Behind each hardly opened gate,
When I have looked Life in the eyes,
Grown calm and very coldly wise,
Life will have given me the Truth,
And taken in exchange -- my youth.

Here's another one from Sara Teasdale. It's very simple and expresses
beautifully the involuntary bargain most of us make when growing up.

I think Sara Teasdale is truly wonderful! You never have to think about what
she means - it is all so simple and straight forward. It is refreshing to
read but always thought provoking.

Thank you so much for introducing me to Sara Teasdale. I have now read everything of hers on Minstrels, and am going to look for a collection of her work.
It is rare to find such a combination of clarity and lyricism, together with an appeal that will surely touch everyone in some way. I would love to hear her work set simply to music.
It is good, too, to find such beautiful words and images in poems that are short enough to learn by heart, so that they are always with you!
