
All positions require that you be a PhD student in good standing, have completed your B exams, and have attended Rice full-time during the previous year. Additional requirements are listed individually.
The faculty rep is responsible for representing the graduate students at faculty meetings (held almost weekly), and for communicating information back to the graduate students. It is at the faculty meetings that most major policy decisions are voted on (e.g., restructuring the exam structure, final decisions on faculty hiring, etc.). This person is also responsible for holding the elections each year to pick new graduate student reps (this is traditionally done in the fall). The faculty committee often votes on policies which were created at meetings of the other committees (all faculty are on this committee).

The faculty recruiting rep acts as a bridge between the faculty and the graduate students during the faculty hiring process. There are three key responsibilities: (1) getting acquainted with the applicants file, to answer questions graduate students might have; (2) organizing the student-candidate meetings; and, (3) collating student responses about the candidate.

This committee makes policy decisions that concern the graduate program, such as advising, exam structure, courses and so forth. Duties include finding suitable reviewers for the B exams. There is a specific procedure for reviewing the B exams that should be followed.

Incumbent: Johnny Chen.
The committee is responsible for choosing incoming graduate students from the applicant pool. The student rep makes arrangements for the invited students, setting up their schedules and assisting with arrangements for their stay.

Incumbent: Chen Ding.
The committee makes decisions regarding departmental facilities such as workstations, terminals, networks, offices and labs. It also meets with corresponding representatives from other departments to discuss common resources.

Incumbent: Henrik Weimer.
This committee makes decisions about the undergraduate curriculum and about various aspects of teaching. Currently, this committee is developing the requirements for a to-be-proposed B. S. in Computer Science. This involves revising the syllabi and prerequisite structure for several undergrad courses.

This committee organizes the annual affiliates meeting.

Incumbent: James Yang.
The student mentoring rep is responsible for organizing the mentoring program for incoming students. The main responsibilities are: (1) making sure appropriate materials are sent to incoming students before entry; (2) establishing contact with them before they arrive; (3) helping them with course and labbying selection and requirements; (4) providing assistance with respect to the city and culture; and, (5) ensuring that the individual mentors are performing responsibly.
