We are pleased to announce the Summer 2000 TeachScheme! Workshops http://www.cs.rice.edu/CS/PLT/Teaching/Workshops/ These are FREE curricular enrichment workshops conducted by computer scientists from Rice University and the University of Utah. The workshops introduce participants to a revolutionary approach to teaching computer science. The introductory portion of this material caters especially to beginning students, eg, in a pre-AP preparatory course. The advanced portions provide accomplished students with a challenging preview of university-level computer science. Teachers who have used it have been enthusiastic about the results. This new approach is founded on three pillars: - A *design methodology* that helps even weak students proceed methodically from problems on paper to well-designed programs. - A modern, student-friendly programming environment that introduces the language as a series of layers, so that students are not inadvertently affected by advanced features. The environment runs on all major platforms, and programs written in it behave identically on all platforms, even when they employ sophisticated graphical and other operations. - A syntactically simple, yet highly expressive, programming language that serves as an ideal introduction to other languages like Java, and reflects the current state of computer science. All this material is available free-of-cost on the Web. The workshops run for a week. We cover not only curricular content, but also issues that arise in teaching this material. Past attendees who have implemented the material in their classes serve as master teachers. The program is also open to college faculty.
