Research Opportunities in France: INRIA and CNRS

Abstract

This talk focuses on research opportunities with INRIA, the French National Research Institute in Computer Science and Automatic Control, and CNRS, the French National Research Center for Scientific Research. The CNRS Department of Communication and Information Science and Technology will be described in detail.

These two French major national research institutes manage many projects in computer science, information science and technology, automatic control, etc., and offer internships, scientific visits, doctoral and postdoc studies, engineering and research positions, and international collaborations.

INRIA aims to network skills and talents from the fields of information and computer science and technology. INRIA includes 750 researchers among the 2500 people conducting 81 different research projects. In 2001, INRIA hosted 350 foreign visiting scientists from all over the world.

CNRS is a public basic-research organization whose mission is to produce knowledge and make it available to society. The CNRS has 25,283 employees (among which are 11,349 researchers and with an additional 13,934 employees comprised of engineers, technical and administrative staff). The 1,200 CNRS service and research units are spread throughout the country and cover all fields of research.

Tuesday, April 16 at 5:00 p.m. in McMurtry Auditorium
A reception in Martel Hall will follow the talk

Biographies

Emmanuel Cecchet conducted research in Artificial Intelligence at INRIA Lorraine in 1996, receiving his BE degree in networks and systems from Institut Supérieur d’Informatique et d’Automatique de Lorraine in 1997. He also conducted research in the Sirac laboratory at INRIA Rhône-Alpes. He received his Ph.D. from Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble in 2001, and received an INRIA postdoc grant to continue his research in the Computer Science department at Rice University.

Pierre Dauchez received his Ph.D. and his "Thèse d'Etat" from the University of Montpellier in 1983 and 1990, respectively. He has been a CNRS researcher at LIRMM, Univ. of Montpellier, since 1984, working in the robotics field. From 1995 to 2000, he headed the Robotics Department of LIRMM. He joined the Office for Science and Technology of the French Embassy in the USA in September 2000 and is posted in Houston
