John Crawford will speak for one hour on IA-64 Instruction Set Architecture and for one hour on IA-64/Merced Microarchitecture. Crawford is an Intel Fellow in Intel's Microprocessor Products Group and Director of Microprocessor Architecture. He is the Principal Architect of the joint Architecture Research with Hewlett-Packard intended to result in 64-bit systems targeted at the high-end desktop, workstation, and server markets by the end of the decade. Crawford directly manages a team of about 35 architects and software developers responsible for architecture definition and the simulation tools to validatethe functional completeness and performance of the architecture.

Crawford joined Intel in 1977 after receiving his M.S. in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. From 1977 to 1982 he worked as a software engineer in the Development Tools Operation. He then became a computer architect for microprossessor design in the Technology and Manufacturing Group. In 1992 Crawford was named the seventh Intel Fellow, the company's highest ranking technical position.
