East Coast, Summer 1998

This summer was dedicated to that great pastime of all PhD students: finishing the dissertation. As such, I went nowhere but here. However, there was a cool side trip to Washington, D.C. for the 4th of July, as orchestrated by the ever-organizing, harmonizing, and unionizing Sharon Beth Kristal.

The Smithsonian Air & Space Museum had an exhibit on Star Wars. This is the real Chewbacca costume.

We actually spent the night in a completely uninteresting Maryland hotel and took the Metro into the city. Sharon Beth never sits.

Everybody has to get their photo in front of the White House, of course. Across the street, all manner of protests try to gain attention, including a fairly vigorous cannabis legalization rally.

Waiting for the fireworks to begin, we were invaded by an amazing dynamo of energy. Blanche begins to show signs of wear.

For some strange reason, Harris came back to town. I decided to further compound this space-time anomaly by taking Harris and Sharon Beth to New Jersey's black hole of kitsch: the Americana Diner.

Later, in a fit of thesis procrastination, I decided I had to see a beach. Behold! Asbury Park, New Jersey. It turns out they've got a pretty cool indoor skating park.
