In Loving Memory of My Grandfather

Elias Nakhleh

I am very proud of my grandfather, and take him as a role model, and hence this page.
Grandfather Elias, my father's father, was born in Rama, Israel (Palestine at the time) in 1913. He got married to my grandmother, Saa'da, in 1935, I believe. Grandfather Elias served in the British Army in Palestine, and then in Lebanon; he rose to a very high rank in the army and received many medals for his bravery and service.
After the independence of the State of Israel, he came back to Israel. In 1959 he was elected to the fourth Knesset -- the Israeli parliament, where he served for four consecutive terms until 1973. During his last term in the Knesset, he became the first Israeli Arab to become Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, becoming the highest ranking Israeli Arab in the history of the State of Israel.
He held different positions during his four terms in the parliament:

His page on the Israeli Knesset website can be viewed here.
A few months before he passed away, Grandfather Elias was awarded The Presidential Medal by the President of the State of Israel for his relentless work and efforts for resolving conflicts and promoting tolerance in Israel.
Grandfather Elias passed away on June 28, 1990, and I shall miss him forever.
