International Day of Protest

Today worldwide, we are observing the International Day of protest. 2 years before, this day saw the barbaric invasion of Iraq - the age-old conquest of age-old civilizations by new white-civilizations. Though not to optimistic, searched around for peace marches in Houston and found one. Right around my house, in Bell Park. Marched along with a whole lot of protesters shouting slogans. There was a lot of police too, for crowd control. There were many fiery speeches and then taped messages and music - both live and recorded. Was filled with pamplets from different organizations protesting against various related issues. Felt good. As I was the only non-white person in the crowd, I could relate and tell - I come from India, another poor but developing country, and can understand the situation of Iraqis. Half the country faces a daily war against poverty, hunger and shelter. We don't need another was with missles and bombs thrust upon us and killing us. We have enough of killers already - disease, hunger, weather. We don't care whether we get to vote or not. We want a benevolent government, not a western-style capitalistic society. When will people realize that cookie-cutters for economy and governance cannot be imposed on every region. Each region is unique will evolve accordingly.

ganja mukhujjye speaks

I just realized how much I am missing bangla for the last few years. Just from the mere accent of bangal (dhaka-i accent) of teni-da fame. Was rolling on the floor and had a smile on my face for the whole day after reading it.

Death penalty for juveniles

US supreme court ruled that the death penalty cannot be given to juveniles. Previously, a 16-year old could face the electric chair. US was the only country in the world, other than war-torn Somalia which allowed this. Barbaric. Maybe US is finally catching up with the rest of the world with regard to basic human rights. The judgement was passed by an astounding number 5-4. Imagine, after Bush pushes through another of his conservative judges, these sort of judgements would not come by. Scary country to live in. Need to get out as soon as possible. :-)
