Subject: Use of DrScheme
Date: Fri, 26 Jun 1998 01:20:54 -0700

Hi,

Since you asked (on your web page)

I use DrScheme for personal and work use. In the past
I've prototyped 3D Graphics rasterization algorithms
(for work). I think I mailed someone over there about
performance problems before. I also use it for writing
small programs that would be a pain to do in C.
For an example, I've recently written a bunch of small
programs to compute exact hit probability and damage
profiles for a tabletop war game to get a handle on designing
effective units.

I recently posted a message to rec.arts.sf.written suggesting
Scheme and DrScheme as a good language and implementation
for non-programmers to learn computer programming.

Thanks for making DrScheme available.

Well, I got the URL from one of the students taking this class, and I'm taking
the class at Lindenwood University. It's a class that revolves around LISP.
We either had the option of going to the computer lab to work on our
programming, or we could find it on the internet. Anyways, thanks for the
info. This program will be a big help.

Hi,

Sorry for the late response. We are going to use DrScheme in the course
"Functional Programming Lab". Its a mandatory lab for second year
undergraduates students. The lab is a prerequisite of the mandatory course
"Programming Languages", where programming paradigms is discussed and
illustrated through Scheme and ML. The teacher is Prof. Catriel Beeri,
I'm his assistant. We haven't started actually the course since there is a
students strike in all academic institutes of Israel.

I have wanted to use the transcript-on command in order to perform an
automatic checking of exercises. I run a shall script which executes the
students' code with my checking program. Instead, I redirect the
output into a file. On a BSDI system, the script executes:
drscheme-jr input_file > output_file
It solves the problem. I assume that DrScheme-jr version 53 is fully
competable with DrScheme of the same version.

Bye,
 Gadiel.

Hi. Thanks for your inquiry. There is no transcript command in
DrScheme because the transcript facility is somewhat ill-defined.
Instead, the File menu contains these three options:

  Save Interactions
  Save Interactions As ...
  Save Interactions As Text ...

These will let you save the contents of the Interaction buffer with or
without the graphical images and other such output. Hopefully you
will find this a more user-friendly option than transcript-on/off.

'shriram

PS: Are you using DrScheme at the Hebrew University, or only on a
personal basis? If it is being used for a course, I'm curious at
    what level. Thanks!

Thanks a bunch-- I'm really impressed with you guys' system. My students
are very happy with the new environment (we were using plain SCM
before)-- however, it'd be nice to save a few seconds at each
interpretation of the definitions window.

> May I ask which class you're using DrScheme in? Is there a URL for
> the course?

I'm teaching at a CS dept in a small university in Puerto Rico. They had
previously been using Pascal in their first programming course, and I
found the practice quite appaling. So I started using scheme and
following the "Simply Scheme" book. I don't have a URL for the course
though. Maybe next year.

Btw, if you recommend a better book than simply scheme, I'm quite open to
looking at other alternatives. My favorite book is SICP but it's a bit
hard for freshmen.

Thanks for your prompt help.

Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 23:17:11 -0500

Hi:

I have been happily using MzScheme for a couple of years for a
theatrical control system based on a 486 running MS-DOS. I extended
the basic program with a serial module to control serial devices and a
(trigger) function to await signals from the parallel port (controlled
by a slide-projector remote control switch). Shows are essentially
long (and fairly simple) scheme programs that alternate trigger
events, sleep periods, and signals to the various external
devices. (video disk players, video switchers, relay controllers,
serial port smart switches, doorbells, motors and so on).

The object system of MzScheme has been a blessing, too, allowing me to
incorporate new devices with a minimum of effort. The threading
capability also promises to be important, although I haven't made much
use of them yet.

The system is in use now, and is running a show called "Millennium" at
a theatre in New York until March 6. (http://users.ids.net/~tomss/mill)

I gather that the most recent versions of MzScheme do not support
MS-DOS any more. Can you tell me which may have been the last version
that might? (I think I am using a non-standard version of the gc.)

Many thanks for a great program.

Thank you for contacting us, and thank you for your interest in
DrScheme. You are free to put the copies of DrScheme on your CD-ROM.
Please make sure you download the current version from our site (it
should be version 53). As for source, we rarely have trouble with
Linux and Windows users. Maybe it makes more sense to include a
document that says that if they have problems, or if they want the
source for compilation, they can try our site directly:

  http://www.cs.rice.edu/CS/PLT/packages/drscheme/

That page also has a form for bug reports. Unless your users are
quite hard-core, they may not find the source easy to compile.

Thank you very much for checking with us even though you did not have
to. May I ask what your magazine is about and why you are interested
in DrScheme? Also, we would be very happy to receive a courtesy copy
of this issue of PC Max. You can send it to my address, and I will
share it with my co-developers:

Hello !
First, let introduce myself.
I'm Alexandre DELOY, and I'm in charge of the cover disks developments
in Edicorp Publications (France).
I am working for PC Max magazine
It happens that we are interested to put Dr Scheme in one of our CD-ROMs
we are building now. (In Windows 95/NT and Linux versions.) Dr Scheme
is distributed under LGPL so I think it's not a problem but since it's
the rule to ask, I ask you if there is any objection to do that ? If you
think it's better, I could put the source code too in the same CD. If
you have any advice to give or observations, just send me a mail.

Please can you answer as soon as possible ? As always in the press
world, everything is URGENT and for yesterday !
If you're not in charge of these agreements, can you forward my request
to the correct person ?
Thanks a lot

Note : If you wish, I could give you a copy of this PC Max issue.

Yes, I'm in a discrete structures and functional programming course, and
both classes in the series (211 and 311) use DrScheme for the lab. Our
lecture book is "Discrete Stuctures, Logic, and Computability" by James
Hein and our lab book is "Simply Scheme" by Brian Harvey and Matthew
Wright. My professor is James Johnson
(http://cs.wwu.edu/faculty/johnson/homejames.html) if you're interested.
The labs at the school (both NT and Sun labs) use DrScheme. I just
wanted to not have to go to the lab, so I found the Mac version for my
own use at home.

Well, the prof doesn't have a web page for our class, but I suppose
there's a description in the catalog
(http://www.wwu.edu/CampusInfo/AdmRegInfo/catalog/cat22.html#311) which
is pretty short.

I am enrolled in EECS 368 at the university of kansas. However we are not
officially using DrScheme. We are allowed to use any implementation that we
chose, as long as we stick to the standard. The majority of the class has
been using DrScheme. Once student found it on the web, spread the word and
from then on, DrScheme for all.

Thank you for your interest! Unfortunately, our material is all
copyrighted by the MIT Press, so we cannot give you permission to copy
and modify it. Essentially, you would have to treat it like any other
textbook published in paper form (which is how it will eventually
appear, while continuing to be available for free on-line), so all the
usual rules governing copyrights and translations apply. You are, of
course, free to link to any of the pages as you deem fit.

Hi,

I will be teaching an intro course on computing using Scheme. Rather
than rediscovering the wheel I'd like to be able to copy various parts
of your teaching notes and problems/solutions to be used by my students
(after adapting to my course objectives and translating in greek!).
Please let me know if this is OK and how I can get access to the
material in the Teaching Materials section.

best wishes

Hi -- thank you for your interest! You asked,

> What are my options for using, adapting, and distributing the material?

Use: We welcome new users of the book. In addition to a growing
number of high schools, some other colleges and universities are also
in the process of incorporating our book into their courses. If you
choose to use it, I would be happy to set you up with password access
to the solution sets and other material (as it becomes available). We
can also put you on our mailing list, where other users discuss
pedagogic questions, especially wrt the differences between
traditional (Pascal-style) curricula and ours.

Adaptation: The material is copyrighted by the MIT Press, who will be
publishing the book when it is completed. Therefore, you will have to
treat it like any other published text. In particular, you can't copy
the book en masse and selectively modify some parts of it.

Availability: We have retained the right to publish a Web version of
the book, which will remain available for free even once the paper
version is released. Therefore, students are welcome to use the book
on-line without fear of disruption of availability. (The worst that
might happen is that the book will move to a dedicated Web site.)

Distribution: You are naturally welcome to make a link to our site.
For now, we *may* be able to arrange for permission for you to make a
local mirror copy of the files, if you want to avoid network
disruptions. In addition, we do provide copyright waivers, and a
loose-leaf version of the book, to teachers who want to make copies
locally for distribution in the classroom. This is how our current
teachers and professors distribute the book. This will of course have
to cease once the paper copy of the book is published.

A few notes about the software:

1. Irrespective of the book's publication status, the software will
continue to remain freely available on the Web.

2. The book works well with in conjunction with DrScheme. In
particular, there are several (and a growing number of) graphical
exercises which are already implemented as "teaching libraries" in the
standard DrScheme distribution; it would take some effort to
re-implement these in other Scheme's. The book also contains some
teachers' and programming environment notes. Many of the former, and
all of the latter, explicitly refer to DrScheme.

I hope this answers your questions. Please let me know if we can
provide additional details.

Hello,

My name is Michael Siff. I am a Professor of Computer Science at Sarah
Lawrence College in New York. This semester I will be teaching an
introductory programming course in scheme --- we will be using Dr.
Scheme software --- and I am interested in possibly using some of the
teaching materials (specifically some of the lecture notes) you have
made available on-line at:

	http://www.cs.rice.edu/CS/PLT/Teaching/Lectures/Released/

What are my options for using, adapting, and distributing the material?

Thanks,

Dear Prof Feijo,

Thank you for the information. You do not need to make any additional
acknowledgement. My only concern is that the Web page

  http://www.inf.puc-rio.br/~coordicc/icc/software.html

suggests that v53 is the new version (I THINK -- sorry, I don't know
any Portugese!). That is not correct: the current version is DrScheme
100, which has many improvements. I suggest two changes:

1. Please download v100, which has many improvements over v53. You
may in particular find the Stepper quite useful for teaching the
semantics of Scheme.

2. Many people find Web sites through search engines; someone
searching for DrScheme in Portugese may end up on your site. Just so
that they don't get out-of-date information, I request that you

(a) put a date on the site stating when you downloaded the local
Windows version, so that people can determine whether or not they
should check the Rice Web site to get the latest version;

(b) name the binary something like plt-v100.exe, so they can tell the
version number from the filename.

I hope this will not be too much trouble for you.

Thank you for getting in touch with us, and good luck with your
course!

'shriram

Dear DrScheme Team,

I would like to inform you that we are using DrScheme as the main tool in
the course "Introduction to Computer Science" (around 7 classes of 35
students every semester). We have a site
(http://www.inf.puc-rio.br/~coordicc/icc) to help the students to download
the software and to get handouts, previous exams, etc... . The site is in
Portuguese. Do you would like to havy any particular acknowledgement or
information in that site ?

Congratulations for the excellent software.

Best regards,

Prof. Bruno Feijo
Coordinator of Post-graduated Studies
Coordinator of ICC (Introduction to Comp. Science)

Just a quick note (prompted by your help desk) to say I am a (neophyte)
DrScheme user. In unreal life I am an application architect designing a
general security architecture based on public key certificates,
deploying a public key infrastructure and working on standard
implementation models for secure browser-based access to internal
applications and resources. In more exciting times I am being prodded
by my buddy Mike to learn Scheme and do real (avocational) programming
-- Mike is a software aesthetician, a position he has invented for
himself. My wife happens to be working on a Master's Degree for the
application of finite fields in cryptography. Seems like helping her on
the programming side would be an excellent way to learn a little Scheme
and a little finite fields. I found DrScheme after getting frustrated
with MIT Scheme -- which was good, but just too awkward to use. I am
quite impressed with DrScheme and have also futzed about with threads
and UI components in MzScheme and MrEd. So far I am very impressed.

On the pedagogical side, I find your help desk quite helpful. Much good
thought has gone into design and realization. I am combining your stuff
with Simply Scheme [Brian Harvey and Matthew Wright] and Structure and
Interpretation of Computer Programs [Abelson Sussman Sussman]. This is
all a refreshing change from working with the vo-tech huddled masses
entering the programming job market (things I'd rather not hear: "Brain
surgery? I dissected a fetal pig in High School. Close enough?"
"Bridge design? I had an erector set as a kid." "Application design? I
have written VBA macros for Excel."). Keep up the good work and keep
pushing for those support dollars.

We just sent out our second mailing to high school teachers. I expect
we have at least one spare copy. If not, it'll take a few days to
generate one.

A NY address would definitely help. Rice's post office may screw up
getting the air mail annotations right, in which case it could take
forever for the book to get to you. I imagine your NY address has no
trouble forwarding stuff to you.

We don't consciously do anything to discourage robot downloads --
indeed, for now, that's what I suggest that people do, and nobody has
yet complained to me about it. Maybe you could try a different robot,
such as the GNU mirror software?

> I'd also appreciate access to the solutions.

Sure. Can you have your school make an official request in a letter
providing your name and email address and attesting that you are a
teacher there? We need this for our records. My fax number is +1
713-285-5930; be sure to mention my name on the cover.

Dear PLT Member,

Thanks to your wonderful pedagogical tool, Dr. Scheme, Scheme has now
become the default language at Bard College. Please check my web page
below for links and details.

Has anyone written any texts for a course in data structures/OOP in
MzScheme?

By the way, I snarfed your lambda image, if that is OK.

That's cool, though it might also be nice if the logo came with
explicit credits or were even just a link to us. Your call.

> Has anyone written any texts for a course in data structures/OOP in
> MzScheme?

Yes and no.

1. We do have a textbook called How to Design Programs:

     http://www.cs.rice.edu/CS/PLT/Teaching/Lectures/

The book covers numerous data structures, and is being adopted at
many schools and universities. Note that the structure of the book
is rather unlike that of typical CS texts -- eg, you won't find a
section entitled "data structures". That's because the goal of the
book (and the curriculum) is to teach program DESIGN, in particular
how one can get from a blank page to a well-designed program by
following certain methodical steps. The book and DrScheme are
wedded closely (DrScheme comes with teaching libraries for the
   book).

The book is and will remain freely available on the Web. At some
point MIT Press will also publish a paper version.

2. Our second course, which is in Java, takes off from where the
Scheme material ends. What we don't say in How to Design Programs
is that the design recipes we teach lead directly to good OO
designs -- indeed, they ARE OO designs but in disguise -- so the
transition to Java takes "15 minutes".

3. We are in the process of putting together notes on using Scheme "in
the real world". This includes chapters on database interfaces,
CGI programming, Web page generation, COM support, etc. This book
will almost certainly include material on using our OO system.

So for now, there is no direct material on OO programming in Scheme.
On the other hand, our OO system is similar enough to that of Java
(the major difference is that our classes are first-class values,
thereby exposing many more abstractions) -- single inheritance
implementation, multiple inheritance interfaces -- that translating
between the two shouldn't be all that hard.

Though we present our material as being for high school students, it
is in fact used at various levels -- high schools are merely the

introductory college curriculum at Rice, and is being adopted by other
universities. We even use it as a quick way to get our incoming
graduate students to understand program design recipes (an undergrad
CS degree doesn't guarantee anything more than that these students can
hack away until something seems to work, unfortunately). And we know
of some small companies that have close ties to us (former students,
etc) where they use our and related material to prep their employees.
So, if we can work out details like an appropriate pace and coverage,
I think this material can indeed be used profitably at your level.

If you haven't looked at the material in much detail, you may be
interested to note that there is in fact a fairly strong and deep
connection between the kinds of data designs we teach and the ones
the OO community has been recommending. Therefore, in our second
semester at Rice, students make the transition from our material to
Java in a very short time, and furthermore produce *clean,
well-designed* Java code, not just a bunch of procedures with the
words class { ... } wrapped around them.

Do let me know if you have questions or comments.

I'm currently the principal technical trainer for the company I work
for. We offer our employees generic technical skills training in the
areas Unix, C++/Java programming, object orientation analysis/design, and
relational databases. For some of the people we hire these topics are to
advanced. So, I've been looking for an introductory programming course
to use inhouse. It seems as though TeachScheme is focused on teaching
high school students. I'd be curious to know if anyone has used it to
teach employees in a corporate setting.

Thanks for your help,
Bill Gosse

Matthias -
It took me a year - but I am using DrScheme and have directed the students
to your notes. The course is a special topics course at Richmond, the
American International University in London, where I am spending the year.
The course touches on software for education: in particular software that
is best for teaching concepts in mathematics and in computer science. So,
we have gone through ISETL for abastract math concepts and now we are into
Scheme for its power in teaching programming and concepts in CS. We
aren't doing everything, but I am giving them some challenging problems to
work on. The last software we'll use is Logo and show them it isn't just
for little kids. But I will give them the flavor that makes it useful for
young kids.

I seem to recall that teachers plug into your stuff where you have
solutions that they can look at.

Anyway, the students have been grateful that all this is FREE and that
they don't have to pay for any of it.

Don

My University is

Westfalische-Wilhelms-Universität Münster
in Münster, Germany.

The Link to our Course is

http://pcwi202.uni-muenster.de/ws99/

BUT, we´re not actually using DrScheme!
We were told to use MIT-Scheme, but unfortunately that program is - as far
as I think - rubbish.

Mostly of course because it does not even suppot the german keyboard-layout.
So in case we'd like to enter bracktes ")" we just have to press "=".

What a mess.

So most of the students tried EdScheme, as I was presented to us as an
Anternative, but it costs more that 100 $ .. and for sure most people cannot
afford that.
Then some lucky student found DrScheme, and by now almost half of us are
using - and enjoying - it!

cu
Fenne.

I have libraries from the text book Simply Scheme. I was wondering how to include theses libraries. A step by step analysis would be nice. I am at Framingham High School in MA. We have an old compiler of Scheme that is DOS based and we would like to use the PLT software.

Shriram,
Hi. Lucky me -- I finally get to teach a languages course.
We're using DrScheme and I'm working with the new draft of eopl. Dan
thinks you may have a pointer to a fix that will let the new
define-datatype macros work in DrScheme. Any chance?

I did finally find a reference to Linux when I was choosing the version
to download. when I wrote that message had seen references only to
MSWindows and Unix (somewhere on the DrScheme website).

I'm an instructor, ordinarily a mathematician but due to faculty
shortages, am teaching the Programming Languages course this semester.
am planning to have them learn some Scheme as part of the course.

Dear PLT,

This note is to let you know we are using DrScheme in our third year
programming languages class, CS 342, in the Computer Science Department
at the University of Western Ontario.

We have just introduced scheme as an element of the course, which is
undergoing heavy revision this semester.

For your links, our departmental web page is www.csd.uwo.ca.

Sincerely,

Stephen M. Watt
Professor and Chair, Dept of Computer Science, U Western Ontario
I am teaching a course in "Concepts in Programming Languages" at
the University of Sciences & Arts of Oklahoma. We are using SCHEME
for the Functional Languages portion of the course. As we are only
doing SCHEME for just a few weeks, I hesitate in ordering a book on
SCHEME for the students.

Is it possible to obtain some copies of the materials on your tutorials
for a brief introduction on SCHEME?

I am impressed with your implementation of Dr. SCHEME software.
It has a nice user interface for beginning students.

Sincerely,

Richard B. Tan

Thanks! That worked. I had played around with the preferences, but I guess
I didn't try that one. I have a 7-lesson functional programming section in
my "Programming Paradigms" course for which the students use Dr. Scheme. We
used an older version last spring and will use it again this fall (when the
course changes the fall semester). The slick IDE really makes it easy for
the students to get going with Scheme fast. You guys have done a great job
with it! After only 3 weeks, the students still favor Ada, but I think
they've gained a good appreciation for Scheme.

Hi,

Sorry for the belated response. I've been on the road a lot lately.

The problem is of course that you're getting the menu entries rather
than the Emacs bindings. The solution is to visit Edit |
Preferences. The third entry in the menu at the top of that window is
very helpfully named "General". Near the bottom of that menu is a
checkbox named "Enable keybindings in menus". The default
distribution has this on. If you turn it off, DrScheme will cease
this (extremely annoying, to me!) behavior.

Let me know if that fails to address your problem.

'shriram

PS: Is DrScheme being used for courses at the Air Force Academy?

The course site is:

http://www.sju.edu/~jhodgson/ppl

I reference your site as a useful one, but don't directly us the
materials. On the other
hand we (that is SJU) may want to use them for some other courses.

I just wanted to thank you all for the DrScheme
package. I am an instructor for the Johns Hopkins CAA
program, where Scheme is taught to gifted 12-15 year
old kids in an intense 3 week summer program at
various sites (Washington College in Chestertown, MD
and Hood College in Frederick, MD are two of them). I
used DrScheme the past 3 weeks for the PC (Windows 98)
and anoter instructor used it for Macintosh (PowerPC)
and we both found it to be the best implementation of
Scheme out there. We even used the graphical and
networking capabilities to develop a client-server AI
competition game, and the kids abolutely love it. I
am teaching again right now for another three weeks
and am using DrScheme on Windows 2000 machines. Just
wanted to let you all know that it is being used, and
to keep up the good work.

Hi,

> So why not just use DrScheme, then?

The only reason was that I was used to STk graphics library and I didn't
want to have to learn new graphics in MITScheme or DrScheme.. Since I
wrote the game referee in STk a while ago I didn't feel like porting it to
something else.

> I notice you don't even list it on your course page,

It's not there? Hmm. We did use it quite a bit last couple
semesters. It seems students prefer DrScheme over MITScheme (the
interface makes a huge difference I think).

Thanks for dropping me a note.

A curricular unit on functional programming has been recently added to the
Israeli CS curriculum in highschools.
The unit uses DrScheme.
The curriculum appears in Hebrew in
http://212.150.202.200/cs/NCCS/TestProg/FuncProg02.htm
The developers are from the Technion – Israel Institute of technology -

Hello friends:

Just a quick note to give you an unpdate on my activities.

I'm back in Mexico City, where I'm teaching a special class called
Principia,
where Math, Physics and Computer Programming are taught as a single,
interleaved class, with emphasis in cooperative learnign and problem
oriented learning.

One of my groups (the electrical engineers) is supposed to learn C;
the other one (CS, CIS, and the rest) is supposed to learn Java this
semester
and C++ the next one (don't ask me why, this is administrative decision :-)

Well, I convinced the Principia director and I'm going to teach Scheme for
the
most part of the semester, then finish with Java. Next semester I'll
continue with
Java and teach the sintaxis of C++. So, I cover the langueages that
aministration wants to cover, and teach good programming practices with our
nice language.

Cheers.

I'll keep you updated
