Dan & Clancy's Roadtrip: Sequoia National Park to Las Vegas

July 2009

With a weekend off during our Defense Science Study Group trip, Clancy and I resolved to go hiking, so we spent two days in Sequoia National Park (wherein I managed to get altitude sickness at 9000 ft.) and then drove to Vegas (wherein we wandered around the Strip for a while, then hustled back to make the 7am bus pickup).

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive..." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?" -- Hunter S. Thompson (P1020492)
